The best you can do is swallow your pride and retreat, and abandon the mission if necessary, at the slightest hint of danger. Everything could be going very well and then you get ambushed once and suddenly you're in a life or death situation because the enemy shuffled your party and crit you once. The thing about this game is that no matter how well you prepare, you will lose heroes, due to the randomness inherent in the gameplay.
That is taking into account modest losses during the level-up process. Now that I got to the "Darkest Dungeon" final levels, I have nothing left to do in the game except to level up another 12+ heroes to level 5 so I can actually run them.
